A bar in Marietta, GA has been pushing Obama as Curious George (the monkey) shirts. One of the protesters says:
“I don’t want people to think this is what Marietta is all about,” she added, motioning towards the tavern. “This is what some people think the South is still like. Marietta’s come a long way but I guess it’s still got a little ways to go.”
I grew up in Marietta, GA. I lived there my entire schooling years, K-12 and I’d argue that there are many in Marietta and in the suburbs of Atlanta who do think this is still the Old South. Case in point, one of the bar owner’s defenders says:
“This place is a diamond in the rough,” said Gene McKinley, a Woodstock engineer. “People here are genuine and honest. It’s the one place I can go without having to worry if I’m offending someone.”
People are so fed up with political correctness that they need a refuge? Don’t associate a black man with a monkey, that’s not so hard to do! The de facto racism that goes on is ridiculous. And many will think, oh it’s just a shirt, don’t get your panties in a twist. But it’s the same as with sexism and it’s pathetic. I wish more people would actually wear there fucked up views on their sleeves and not try to hide their racism with stupid shirts depicting a black man as a cartoon monkey.
