‘From my perspective, Mark Richt does a very good job with discipline and so does [men’s basketball coach] Dennis Felton,’ UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said. ‘They have very structured programs and they talk to their players regularly about the consequences of their actions. They’ve been great whenever I’ve had to call to them about a situation.
‘The bottom line is 18-, 19-, 20-year-olds don’t always make the best decisions. The only difference in an athlete and a regular student is a regular student doesn’t get his name in the paper when he messes up.’

Well, if you get arrested by the UGA fuzz then you do get your name in the paper, The Red & Black, no matter who you are. ACC arrests are not published, unless you get 2nd or subsequent DUI in Athens and your name and mugshot runs in the Athens Banner-Herald. Mine was in Texas so my name and face stayed out of the paper, thank goodness.
And well, yes, students do stupid shit, but the police in Athens target all students not just large, black student-athletes. Police in Athens are all over downtown on any given night, yes keeping the peace, but also issuing numerous money-making citations while other crimes are perpetrated all over the county. Athens-Clarke County has a huge gang problem, and crime is common. There was a scary rapist stealing girls away from downtown after football games and it took police months to figure out anything was even going on, to link the cases and catch the guy — but they certainly made a ton of money catching 20 year olds underage drinking.
